Arsenal have just broken another record. Here’s their great consecutive sequences

On 4 April 2015 Arsenal made it seven consecutive wins in a row in the league, starting with a 2-1 home win over Leicester City on 10 February.

Of course runs are hard to create – so I thought I might highlight a few of the great runs the club has had over the years.  But just to keep our feet on the ground, here a couple from the negative run of results that have also hit the club over the years

26 February 1927: Arsenal 6 Burnley 2.  It was the last victory for a while as Arsenal then suffered six consecutive defeats in which the club let in 26 goals.

12 March 1977QPR 2 Arsenal 1; The 7th and final consecutive defeat – the worst run in Arsenal’s history – ever.

But let’s not dwell on such matters.  Here are the good things.

30 August 1930: The start of the triumph that was the 30s.  Arsenal 4 Blackpool 1,  The first of five consecutive wins and 9 unbeaten.  Arsenal had never played like this before!

23 August 1947: 1 year on from Arsenal’s worst start the start of the best start. Arsenal begin with 6 consecutive wins

24 March 1956: Sheffield Utd 0 Arsenal 2.  It was the start of six consecutive wins without conceding a goal, but the poor start to the season (just one win in the first nine) had removed any chance of a challenge for the title, and Arsenal ended 5th.

11 January 1969: Arsenal 2 Sheffield W 0.  Six consecutive wins; one goal conceded. The first “six in a row” in the league since March/April 1956.

20 January 1982: Stoke 0 Arsenal 1 to make it six consecutive league wins, although a defeat to Tottenham in the cup on January 2 spoiled the fun.

11 March 1998: Wimbledon 0 Arsenal 1; after blackouts and security alerts for what should have been the 19th league match of the season, the game was finally played and marked the start of the 10 consecutive victories that ended with the title

11 April 1998: Arsenal 3 Newcastle Utd 1.  Manninger’s record of 8 consecutive games without conceding ended on the 31st league game of the 2nd Double season.    The second double: part 1, part 2, part 3.

2 February 2002: Arsenal 1 Southampton 1.  Through this draw Arsenal broke the  consecutive goal scoring record, scoring in 26 consecutive games, and then went on to win every single league game.   League match 25 of the 3rd Double season.

6 April 2002: Arsenal 2 Tottenham 1.   League match 33 of the 3rd Double season, the 8th game of 13 consecutive wins to the end of the season.  Ljungberg and Lauren scored.

18 August 2002: Following the retirement of Tony Adams, Vieira took over as captain.  Arsenal 2 Birmingham 0.  This made 14 consecutive wins – a new record for the top division in England.  Arsenal then played another 8 league games before finally being beaten.

28 September 2002:  In the same game as above Arsenal also beat Chesterfield’s 72 year old record of scoring in 47 consecutive league games set between December 1929 and December 1930 in the Third Division north.

6 October 2002: Arsenal beat Sunderland 3-1 to make it 7 wins and 2 draws in 9 – and 30 consecutive unbeaten in all – a new Premier League record.  It was the last game of the sequence – Arsenal lost the next game.

  1. Quite right Jamie – distracted by Easter Sunday lunch out with the grandchildren. Sorry.

  2. So what record have we just broken? Seven consecutive league wins is less than the 10 consecutive league wins in 1998.
