Arsenal and Southampton in late summer – a historical review

Today we play Southampton in the league cup.  Here’s a look back to some other events involving Arsenal and Southampton in the late summer of previous years.

August

1947

11 August 1947: Dan Roper signs from Southampton  (See background article here)

1992

21 August 1992: Perry Groves sold to Southampton for £750,000.

1997

23 August 1997: Luis Boa Morte first league game v Southampton. The press were critical about “foreign imports”.   It was the 3rd league game of the 2nd Double Season

1998

3 August 1998: Scott Marshall transferred to Southampton having played 26 games for Arsenal

1999

14 August 1999: Last game for Luis Boa Morte (v Sunderland) before moving on to Southampton.

27 August 1999: Luis Boa Morte sold to Southampton.

2011

8 August 2011:  Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signs from Southampton for  £12.0m.

September

1993

25 September 1993: Arsenal 1 Southampton 0.  It concludes a run of six wins and a draw in the league.  Arsenal would not score again in the next four games, and did not win again until 20 November.

1995

23 September 1995: Arsenal make it seven unbeaten with 4-2 win over Southampton

1999

18 September 1999:   Thierry Henry on as a sub scored first goal for Arsenal to beat Southampton 1-0. He received the ball from Adams, with his back to goal, 20 yards out, turned and shot.  Henry said, “My goal today was very important for me. I have missed at least 14 or 15 chances for Arsenal and my confidence was low.”

2012

15 September 2012: After two goalless draws and a 2-0 win at Liverpool Arsenal beat Southampton 6-1
