West Ham in March – how we’ve played them in the past

The following are extracts from the Arsenal Anniversary files.  Most days we publish the anniversaries for the day on the home page of this site and Untold Arsenal.

1 March 1930: West Ham 0 Arsenal 3.  FA Cup round 6 on the way to the cup final and Arsenal’s first ever major trophy.

2 March 1963: West Ham 0 Arsenal 4.  The match proved to be the start of manager Billy Wright’s longest unbeaten run – six games.

2 March 1998: WHU 0 Arsenal 0.  27th league game of the 2nd Double season    The second double: part 1, part 2, part 3.

7 March 1927: West Ham 7 Arsenal 0.  Chapman’s worst defeat (equal to October 23 1926) and the fourth 0-7 that Arsenal suffer in the first division. It started a sequence of 6 defeats letting in 26 goals.

8 March 1975: Arsenal 0 West Ham 2.  FA Cup 6th round.  This was the fourth consecutive defeat in league and cup.

8 March 1998: Arsenal 1 WHU 1.  FA Cup 6th round on the way to the second Double.    The second double: part 1, part 2, part 3.

17 March 1998: WHU 1 Arsenal 1,  FA Cup 6 Replay.  Anelka scored in the game, and Arsenal win on penalties on the way to the second double.   The second double: part 1, part 2, part 3.

20 March 1976: Arsenal 6 West Ham 1; the best win in the worst season since 1924/25.  Kidd (3) Ball (2) and Armstrong got the goals, but there was only one more victory in the remaining seven league games.

20 March 2010: Arsenal beat WHU 2-0 away to go top of the league; it is their 6th straight win.

21 March 1964: John Radford made his Arsenal debut away at West Ham United.  It ended 1-1.  Alan Skirton scored the Arsenal goal.

22 March 1976: After a 6-1 defeat of West Ham two days before., Bertie Mee announced he would leave Arsenal at the end of the season  Thereafter Arsenal won one, drew one and lost five to finish 17th.

24 March 1990: Derby 3 Arsenal 1.  Kwame Ampadu League debut as a sub.  He made one more appearance as a sub and moved on to West Brom in the summer of 1991.

26 March 1932: West Ham 1 Arsenal 1.  The start of a run of five without a win that meant Arsenal would finish second not first.  Everton won the league for the second time in five years.
