By Tony Attwood
We’ve been keeping some of our past players in our sights from time to time and here is the latest that I have on Tony Adams.
After a mid table position last year (although with a very strong second half of the season and a long unbeaten run) Tony seems to be getting the measure of life in Azerbaijan.
In the forth round of the Unibank Premier League, Gabala travelled to the Guzanly Stadium in Aghdam to face FK Qarabagh and won through. Now I admit this news would mean a little more if I knew how many rounds there were in the Cup, but still a win is a win…
Here’s the league position which makes things look a little clearer
1. | Khazar Lankaran | 5 | 4 | 1 | 0 | 7 | 13 |
2. | Gabala | 5 | 3 | 2 | 0 | 3 | 11 |
3. | Kapaz | 5 | 3 | 0 | 2 | 3 | 9 |
4. | Baki | 5 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 8 |
5. | Garabag | 4 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 7 |
6. | AZAL | 5 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 7 |
7. | Neftchi | 4 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 6 |
8. | Turan | 5 | 2 | 0 | 3 | -1 | 6 |
9. | Inter | 4 | 2 | 0 | 2 | -2 | 6 |
10. | Ravan | 5 | 0 | 2 | 3 | -3 | 2 |
11. | Simurg | 5 | 0 | 2 | 3 | -5 | 2 |
12. | Sumgayit Sheher | 4 | 0 | 1 | 3 | -6 | 1 |
Gabala FC play their home matches at the Gabala City Stadium in Qabala. The stadium is being greatly upgraded to include 14,000 capacity stadium and training facility plus hotel and conferencing facilities, as well as retail and corporate hospitality space. There are pictures and details here.
The club has even got a web site in English and although there are not huge details there are enough to give an idea of what’s what. Tony does the occasional brief interview for the site, although I suspect it is translated into the local language and back again – it doesn’t quite read like Tony Adams as we remember him.
There are some oddities on the site – such as the first team fixture list – but I would not want to be critical here. They have a site in English for goodness sake, which means we can get a clue as to what Tony is doing.
I’ll come back for a further look later.
Arsenal History and Untold Arsenal on Twitter @UntoldArsenal
Between them, Untold Arsenal, and Arsenal History received over 500,000 page impressions in August. You can also read Tony’s regular column “Arsenal Uncovered” throughout this season in the club programme. Thanks to everyone involved for your continuing support.
Arshavin was at the Gabala Stadium during his summer vacation, but Tony Adams was not there.
I believe Tony Adams has written a book? Perhaps Tony was back here promoting the book? Somewhere I read that Mr Wenger is a poor coach, per Tony Adams?
This site is different in establishing the true history The Gunners.
A labour of love. Kudos.
i very much hope adams succeeds over there and makes a move for a role at arsenal…we need him
