The strange behaviour and goalscoring decline of Adebayor

Adebayor, who on this day in 2006 scored for Arsenal, is not exactly remembered fondly by Arsenal fans because of his exploits in leaving the club and what he did later, but the extraordinary thing about his was that when he was playing, in 104 games he got 46 goals.  A ratio of 0.44 goals a game.  And so Manchester City bought him for £25m – a huge fee at the time, especially huge for a player who was already showing signs of slightly eccentric behaviour.

By 2011/12 after a time with Manchester City and on loan to Real Madrid he played, again on loan, with Tottenham his ratio went up to 0.51 goals a game – a very good ratio for any striker in a top league.

But his behaviour was getting worse.   He was booked for goading Arsenal fans after he had moved to Man City,  was accused of hitting his best made Alex Song in a game, and then later of stamping on Cesc Fàbregas in another match.

So Tottenham decided to buy the striker from Manchester City, and they kept him for three seasons.  During those season he played just 59 games and scored only 18 goals, taking the ratio down to 0.3 goals a game.  After that Crystal Palace had him and got one goal out of him in 12 games, and then gave up.  He is now with Kayserispor in Turkey, but I don’t have any information on him playing as yet.

17 September 1932: Arsenal beat Bolton 3-2.  Bolton were 10th before the game – and the result took Arsenal up to 4th.  There was one change in the team as Roberts came back at centre half after four games out through injury.

17 September 1934: Arsenal were away to Blackburn who had won just one match up to this point, and scored just five goals.  Arsenal had already beaten them 4-0 in the third match of the season. It looked like an away banker but Arsenal lost 0-2.

17 September 1934: James Marshall, claimed by the media to be the “next Alex James” played his first match for Arsenal.  He only managed three more.

17 September 1938: Reg Cumner’s first league appearance for Arsenal: Wolverhampton 0 Arsenal 1 – Arsenal’s goal being scored by…. Reg Cumner.    He was one of the players who came through the Margate academy to play for Arsenal  See also here.

17 September 2006: For the fourth league match in a row Arsenal scored zero or one goal – in this game beating Man U 0-1 for their first win of the season.  Adebayor was the scorer. Henry and Gilberto had got the other two thus far this season.

1 comment to The strange behaviour and goalscoring decline of Adebayor

  • We know that many of today’s players are mercenaries but Adebayor was in a class of his own. He’d join a club, play well for 6 months, then his form would drop off and he would agitate for a move. Didn’t just happen at Arsenal. On today’s anniversaries, I believe that in our 1-1 draw with Blackpool. Tommy Coakley scored his only goal for the club, while Blackpool’s reply came from the recently sold Alan Skirton.
