On this day in 2001 Thierry Henry, Robert Pires and two from Dennis Bergkamp started Arsenal’s great away games run which went on for 22 away games without defeat after a season in which the media went on and on and on about Arsenal’s poor away form. The club had come runners’ up in the league, which went unnoticed. They had lost seven away games – that was the talking point.
Henry scored on 43 minutes, Parlour was sent off on 51 minutes in order to try and give the home team a chance, Pires scored a penalty on 87 after Cole was tripped in the area (although the Sunday papers all said he dived), and then Bergkamp on as a sub got two to make it 0-4.
