Arsenal sat third and Tottenham second in the league ahead of the final day’s games for 2015/16, with Tottenham needing just one point (at relegated Newcastle) to secure second and end above Arsenal for the first time since 1995.
Here is the table before that match
Team | P | W | D | L | F | A | GD | Pts | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Leicester City | 37 | 23 | 11 | 3 | 67 | 35 | 32 | 80 |
2 | Tottenham Hotspur | 37 | 19 | 13 | 5 | 68 | 30 | 38 | 70 |
3 | Arsenal | 37 | 19 | 11 | 7 | 61 | 36 | 25 | 68 |
4 | Manchester City | 37 | 19 | 8 | 10 | 70 | 40 | 30 | 65 |
Despite Newcastle having a man sent off, Tottenham unbelievably lost 1-5, while Arsenal beat Villa 4-0 to secure second place, and achieve one of the most unlikely St Totteringham’s Day victories ever.
The game was part of a nine-match unbeaten run in the League which concluded the season
Team | P | W | D | L | F | A | GD | Pts | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Leicester City | 38 | 23 | 12 | 3 | 68 | 36 | 32 | 81 |
2 | Arsenal | 38 | 20 | 11 | 7 | 65 | 36 | 29 | 71 |
3 | Tottenham Hotspur | 38 | 19 | 13 | 6 | 69 | 35 | 34 | 70 |
4 | Manchester City | 38 | 19 | 9 | 10 | 71 | 41 | 30 | 66 |
Since then, until the day of writing this (15 May 2022) there has not been another St Totteringham’s Day, but it is perhaps worth noting that the gap between the two clubs has been very narrow of late. After there being 17 points gap in 2018, that gap narrowed to one point in 2019, was three points in 2020 and one point again in 2021.
We await the end of the 2021/2 season to see if the situation has finally been returned to normal.
