This is part of our video collection series in which we gather together the videos we can find of Arsenal matches against an individual club: in this case Brentford.
Here’s a list of the other clubs we have covered in the series – and this list is updated on our home page regularly.
In fact we have played rarely against Brentford in the modern era – the only games that have had cameras there being against Brentford in the League Cup in 2018 and in a friendly. But there was a spell when Brentford were not only in the top division but actually the team that could cause Arsenal havoc. And that amazingly enough was in the 1930s when Arsenal ruled the roost.
For after Brentford’s promotion Arsenal went seven consecutive games in the league without a win against the club! And it wasn’t that Brentford were the much stronger club – as can be seen from the season end column. Brentford actually only came above Arsenal once -in their first season in 1935/6; otherwise we came above them.
In the first post-war year Arsenal sank down to 13th, as an exhausted George Allison kept the club going while waiting for Tom Whittaker to return from his wartime posting. But by the time of the following season – in which Tom won us the league at his first attempt, Brentford had returned to the lower leagues.
Here are the games

Brentford stayed in Division Two until 1953/4 when they were relegated again to the Third Division (South) and then to the Fourth Division in 1961/2 thus giving them a clean sweep of all available divisions of the football league.
The promotion last season marks their first return to the top division, and thus their first appearance in the Premier League. But they arrive having played 10 against Arsenal with five wins, three draws and two defeats. One of the very few teams that have beaten Arsenal more than we have beaten them!
As for the videos we only have one league cup game, and before that the June 2020 friendly
League Cup 2018
And that is it!
